Licorice, More Than Sweet
There are literally hundreds of compounds stemming from the licorice plant but the main compound active in licorice is called glycyrrhizin. Where you find glycyrrhizin, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties are sure to follow.
For decades, people have been using licorice for skin and for all kinds of other ailments. Elders believed in the power of the glycyrrhiza glabra, the root of the plant.
HOW IS LICORICE ROOT USED?
Ancient Egyptians knew licorice had healing powers and so they used it, and it was a key ingredient in Royal drinks. The extract is sweet, so you can add it to teas for an all-natural sweetness. Some of the licorice benefits include reducing inflammation, making better an upset tummy and addressing respiratory issues.
Licorice root was so therapeutic, the Chinese natives started dissolving licorice powder for medicines and sweet treats. But some manufacturers will try and fool you with a licorice substitute called Pimpinella anisum or anise oil. The two tastes almost the same so it would be easy to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.
